Internationally renowned artist Shimon Attie will lead and host a cross-disciplinary colloquium dealing with Art, Memory, Community, and Commemoration. The colloquium will combine Thursday evening public presentations by distinguished guest speakers from across the Humanities, with small group and individual meetings on each of the successive Friday mornings. The more intimate Friday meetings will be open only to those students officially enrolled in the colloquium. These sessions will be with Attie and with each of the invited guest speakers.

The four Thursday evening presentations will be open to the larger public, and will be hosted and organized by Shimon Attie.

  • January 26: Attie will present relevant selections of his own work to the larger Syracuse community.   Talk is scheduled for 6pm in Watson Auditorium.
  • February 9: World renowned scholar and 911 Memorial Competition Jury Member Professor James Young will speak about Art and Memory, the complexities and challenges of public commemoration, as well as his experiences with the 911 Memorial Competition process. Talk is scheduled for 6pm in Watson Auditorium.
  • March 1: Visual artist and current MacArthur “genius award” fellow Anna Schuleit will present some of her powerful public art installations that have dealt with memory, community, and re-generation. Talk is scheduled for 6pm in Watson Auditorium.
  • March 22: Novelist and former NY Times South Asia bureau co-chief Amy Waldman will discuss her recently released and acclaimed novel, “The Submission.”  The novel tells the story of an anonymous competition to design a 9/11 memorial -- and of the American Muslim who wins it, and all that ensues. Attie will engage in a public conversation with each speaker following their presentation, which will also be opened up to the larger audience. Talk is scheduled for 6pm in Watson Auditorium.
